The Last Hunters

Come and visit an unusual, faraway world with us. You will experience both pleasant as well as cruel moments that the rough life of Lamalera whale hunters on the Indonesian island Lembata brings them. They are one of the last hunters on our planet that hunt in a traditional way not only whales but also dolphins and mantas. For centuries now, they have been going out on old wooden boats to fight unmerciful battles for life and death with the gigantic sperm whales using bamboo harpoons. It is not always a victorious battle.

This dramatic document offers exciting moments as well as moments for contemplation about the uncertain future of this community whose survival depends not only on the courage but also on the luck of these “last hunters”.

PRISONERS OF A WHITE GOD

Lao People’s Democratic Republic exercises development programs which implement relocations of whole villages from mountain areas to the lowlands or along the roads.

These activities are supposed to lead to abatement of swidden agriculture and opium production and also to the concentration and integration of village inhabitants into the majority of Lao society. Akhas are among the most affected.

Bizzare world

The Carpathian Hills are interlaced with hundreds of small streams struggling their way down to the valley. The Wolf Stream is one of these brooks, creating dozens of pools on its way down. Although we, humans, consider them to be empty and forsaken, they have been full of life since prehistoric times.  Each of them hides countless everyday stories of its miraculous residents. Due to their inaccessibility their inhabitants have remained concealed from most people up to now. This may be the reason why we, human beings, have not been able to protect this fragile and vulnerable world against our destructive influence.

                                         Waiting for White Death

White death – waiting for and meeting the great white man-eating shark is the main topic of this fascinating book

Carcharodon carcharias —
the great white shark, alias White Death.
It has scared and thrilled us from time immemorial. Among its greatest (and unconditional) admirers belongs Steve Loveček Lichtag. He didn’t hesitate when he got an opportunity to form a top filming and diving team. During one year a unique document about “the great white” was being created off the South African coast. This was the first time that the film-makers dared to come close to this spine-chilling object of their interest without any protective equipment. A film was made, hundreds of photos were taken and this book was created. Lichtag depicts his journey of his life’s dream from the first idea to the culmination of his African adventure. Arrestingly and originally, Steve introduces the readers to team members and the techniques of submarine filming work; but mainly to the climax of his effort, which were many meetings with the most dangerous underwater predator. This film includes dramatic and humorous stories of the expedition. A remarkable picture of a journey to see great white is supplemented by brilliant photos taken in the most suspenseful moments of shooting.

The story starts on the waves of the Indian Ocean in South Africa, in the middle of never-ending days of tiresome waiting for a dangerous monster. Steve Loveček-Lichtag is a real adventurer.

“Unfortunately I never fear, I lack self-preservation”, he says about himself.

Every day costs him a lot of money and nerves. He has a dilemma; is visiting the great white beyond the limit of madness?

                                      Dance of the Blue Angels

If this book was a song, it would play on the radio non-stop. Steve Lichtag has a habit of taking the first instrument on hand and getting the show running until totally exhausted. You might have taken part in his filming expedition to “the great white” in his last book Waiting for White Death. This time whales are the target and if you think that’s not exciting, you’re wrong!

You are on the move with Steve Lichtag, on the edge and with a peculiar sense of humour; he arranges filming permits, looks for a boat, searches for humpback whales or shoots under water in one breath.  Mapping the expedition leading through the Dominican Republic to a unique whale location, the Silver Bank, is full of dramatic and funny situations. Together with the diving and boat team you experience multiple moments of excitement and disappointment, which shooting of easily frightened blue whales brings. And also many rough and crazy-funny stories that can happen only to a party of people obsessed with their job. The film as well as the book is full of thrill and excitement. It is completed with a poetic story of a handicapped girl, Veronika. At the end you find out that the “blue angels” aren’t just whales and that in life there is often a bridge, which offers you the opportunity to look back and realize your place in the world.
